Google review management in India: do it yourself vs an agency vs an AI tool
By the StartCloudOps team3 min read
Every local business with a Google Business Profile has the same job: get more genuine reviews, reply to all of them, and notice the bad ones quickly. There are three ways to get it done. Here is how they compare for a typical shop, clinic, salon or restaurant in India.
The quick comparison
| Do it yourself | Agency | AI tool (StartCloudOps Review) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, but your time | Monthly retainer; varies widely, ask for a quote | ₹200 per location every 30 days |
| Your time per week | About 15–30 min per 10 reviews, if you remember | Little | A few minutes to approve replies |
| Reply speed | When you find time | Depends on the agency | Draft ready as soon as the review syncs |
| Bad-review alerts | Only if you check | Usually in a report | Email within hours |
| Control over replies | Full | Agency writes in your name | Full: you approve before publishing |
| Getting more reviews | You make your own link and QR | Varies | Review QR flyer and WhatsApp link included |
| Main risk | Replies stop when you’re busy | Fake reviews or gating to show results | Over-trusting auto-replies (keep negatives manual) |
Option 1: Do it yourself
Google lets you reply to reviews for free from Google Search or Maps when you’re signed in as the owner. For a single shop with a few reviews a month, this is enough.
- Good: free, personal, and you know every customer.
- Not so good: it’s the first task to drop in a busy week. There are no alerts unless you check, and writing a careful reply to an angry customer at 11 pm is hard.
Option 2: Hire an agency
Digital marketing agencies often bundle review replies with social media and ads. A good one saves you time.
- Good: hands-off; useful if you’re already paying them for other marketing.
- Watch out: someone outside your business writes in your name and may not know what really happened. Ask exactly how they get you more reviews. If the answer involves writing reviews, buying them, or only asking happy customers, walk away: all of these break Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or the profile restricted.
Option 3: An AI review tool
A tool connects to your Business Profile, writes the reply for you, and you approve it. You keep control, it costs less than an agency, and it doesn’t forget.
- Good: fast, cheap per location, consistent, with alerts.
- Watch out: don’t switch on automatic replies for negative reviews. Choose a tool that keeps 1–3 star replies manual, and read the drafts before they go out.
Which one is right for you?
- One shop, a few reviews a month, and you enjoy replying: do it yourself.
- You already pay an agency for marketing: ask them to include replies, and check how they collect reviews.
- Several reviews a week, several branches, or you keep falling behind: an AI tool pays for itself in saved time and in the customers who see you reply.
Whichever you choose, the rules are the same: ask every customer, never pay for reviews, never write them yourself, and reply to every one. See also how to reply to negative reviews and our AI review reply tool checklist.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth paying for Google review management?
If replies keep slipping or bad reviews go unnoticed, yes. An AI tool such as StartCloudOps Review costs ₹200 per location every 30 days, usually less than one lost customer.
Can an agency guarantee more 5-star reviews?
No one can honestly guarantee star ratings. Be careful with anyone who does: guaranteed ratings usually mean fake reviews or review gating, both against Google’s policies.
